A tadpole-shaped island west of Manila, Corregidor is one of the country's most popular historic and tourist sites. The tropical isle's proximity to Manila Bay made it the designated checkpoint for incoming vessels, giving the island its proper name, Corregidor, from the Spanish "corregir" meaning, "to correct".

The peaceful green hills and tranquil seas that characterize present-day Corregidor belie the island's dramatic past. Nicknamed "The Rock" and "The Gibraltar of the East" because of the fortifications dotting its rocky landscape, Corregidor served a formidable and strategic role in the history of the Philippines. Throughout the years, it served a fortress - even once used as Allied Headquarters by General Douglas MacArthur during World War II - and the site of military conflicts. The most notable engagement that took place on Corregidor was the Battle of Corregidor in 1942, the culmination of the Japanese campaign for the conquest of the Philippines.

Corregidor today is a vista of breathtaking natural beauty mingling with the relics of the past. Historic shrines, like the Pacific War memorial and the Filipino Heroes Memorial, and military structures, like barracks and batteries, mix with lush greenery and scenic seaside havens to make up the unique landscape of Corregidor.
