Olango Island, “The Bird Island of Central Philippines,” is a critical stopover of up to 50,000 migrating water birds flying the East Asian migratory flyway yearly. Pacem Eco-Park along Sumulong Highway, Assumption is a haven of over 80 of the country’s 1,600 species of butterflies and a number of native and foreign birds such as mynahs, owls, eagles, and parrots.
The Philippine Eagle Research and Nature Center is home to the world’s largest eagle, the Philippine Eagle (once known as the monkey-eating eagle), the country’s national bird. The Center for the Philippine Raptors in Los Baños is a rescue and rehabilitation center for diurnal and nocturnal raptorial birds, and a captive breeding facility for Philippine birds of prey, especially the highly endangered Philippine Eagle.
• Olango Island, Cebu, Philippines
Olango Island supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found thus far in the country. Migration of these birds starts from their breeding places in Siberia, Northern China, and Japan. Based on data gathered so far, the birds use Olango as a major refueling station as well as a wintering ground. At Olango, the birds can replenish their fat reserves by feeding on the rich supplies of invertebrates in the intertidal mudflats. These fat reserves fuel the birds on the next lap of their journey, which may cover from 3,000 to 15,000 kilometers of nonstop flight.
• Philippine Eagle & Nature Research Center, Davao, Philippines
It is home to the world’s largest eagle, the Philippine Eagle, the country’s national bird. Once known as the monkey-eating eagle, the Philippine Eagle is endemic to the eastern portion of the Philippines, comprising the Sierra Madre Mountains in eastern Luzon and the heavily forested area of Mindanao. The largest eagle, standing to about 3.5 feet, may be recognized by its powerful bill, strong legs and claws. The general body color is grayish brown on the back and wings, whitish on the front, neck, and belly, with shafts of gray brown streaked feathers on the head, which, when erect, form a crest.

• Center for Philippine Raptors, Laguna, Philippines
Situated in Los Baños, Laguna, the site serves as a rescue and rehabilitation center for rescued, confiscated, or donated diurnal and nocturnal raptorial birds. It is also a venue for scientific research and public education as well as a captive breeding facility for Philippine birds of prey, with emphasis on the highly endangered Philippine Eagle, the world’s largest eagle.
• Pacem Eco-Park, Antipolo, Philippines
Pacem Eco-Park was established by Assumption Antipolo to raise concern for the environment among students, teachers and staff, parents and visitors to the school, by providing them with an experience of the beauty of nature and the oppurtunity to reflect on the importance of ecological security to the survival of our planet. Situated within the campus af Assumption Antipolo, the park is a major component of the school environmental education efforts. It features an eco-center, a miniforest, a wildlife sanctuary, an aviary and a pond.
